What is the energy compensation system?

Aiming to promote greater energy efficiency and better utilization of natural resources associated with electricity, the energy compensation system is a method of exchange between the end consumer and the local distributor. This process is made possible by small power generators that, upon realizing the received energy is not being used, return it to the supplier.

Regulation and types of energy

The energy compensation system has been regulated by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) since 2012 and can only be applied in the case of hydropower, solar, wind, qualified cogeneration, or biomass energy. The goal is to promote and increasingly encourage the use of clean and sustainable energy throughout the country, both in residential and industrial aspects.

Benefits for the consumer

Those who invest in the electric energy compensation system benefit from the possibility of offsetting their own energy consumption: when they return the unused electricity, they receive a “positive balance” that can be deducted from the next bill, or within the next 36 months.

This discount can also be transferred to another consumer unit, as long as it is within the same concession area and under the same account holder’s name. This is a benefit widely used by large industries that have multiple local energy consumer units.

Environmental benefits

In addition to the end consumer, the energy compensation system also brings benefits to the environment. This is because the process allows for savings on energy transmission investments, encourages the use of renewable sources, and promotes better resource utilization.
