Do you know how the amount you pay for your electricity bill is determined?
The price of the tariff in Brazil is set by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL).
The calculation is based on the values of each portion of the investments, technical operations, and the structure necessary for the energy to reach the consumer.
The final amount is composed of the sum of all the components of the process of generation, transmission, distribution, and commercialization of electric energy.
From this, charges are added to cover the application of public policies and the taxes PIS, COFINS, and ICMS.
According to ANEEL, the tariff must have the necessary value to ensure the supply of energy, ensure service providers gain to cover operational costs efficiently, remunerate the necessary investments for capacity expansion, and guarantee good quality service.
Evolution of the tariff system
Until the 1990s, the same tariff was paid throughout the country.
After that, it was realized that this model did not encourage companies to seek efficiency, as all the cost was borne by the consumer.
It was then decided that the tariff would be defined by the concessionaire, according to the specific characteristics of each concession area, that is, each region in which a company is contractually obliged to supply energy.
For this reason, today there are different tariffs in Brazilian states and cities, as they are calculated taking into account the number of consumers, the kilometers of network, the cost of purchased energy, and state taxes.
