Have you ever stopped to think about how the electricity generated by large power plants reaches our homes, businesses, offices, and industries? The process is quite complex and involves much more than just sending the energy through the power grid. In fact, throughout the journey, it is necessary to transmit, transform, and distribute the electricity within strict quality and safety standards.

The first step is precisely the generation of energy in large power plants, such as the famous Itaipu. The force of the waters moves the energy-generating device, which is then transmitted throughout Brazil via insulating and highly resistant cables that are placed on metal towers along the way.

This mechanism forms the electricity transmission network. Upon leaving the plant, a transformer increases the electrical voltage of the energy, which prevents waste. However, this voltage is very high and impossible to be used by the end consumer.

To solve the problem, substations with large transformers are installed along the way to reduce the electrical voltage that will reach the homes.

After the generation and transmission of energy, it is time for distribution. As we have seen, the voltage is reduced by large transformers throughout the journey and then distributed with the help of other types of transformers — smaller and located on city poles.

How does a power transformer work?

The transformer is a highly resistant piece of equipment, equipped with a core composed of two coils: the primary, which acts in receiving the electrical voltage, and the secondary, which performs the entire process of decreasing or increasing it.
