The role of temporary power in meeting Amazonas’ demands

Amazonas faces significant energy challenges, with 57 out of 62 municipalities relying on isolated power generation systems. In March 2016, 159 power generators were delivered to 91 locations, adding 124.8 MW to the existing 380 MW, with an investment of R$ 160 million. The government plans to invest R$ 6 billion by 2018 in improvements including new thermal power plants, integration into the SIN, and network expansion, creating opportunities for the temporary power sector.

Energy Challenges in Amazonas

In 2016, bringing electricity to all municipalities in the state of Amazonas remains a significant challenge. Out of the 62 municipalities in Amazonas, more than 90% (57) still rely on the installation of an isolated power generation system for local supply.

Delivery of Power Generators

To give an idea, in March alone, 159 power generators were delivered to provide uninterrupted energy to 91 different locations. This number of power generators represents an additional 124.8 MW to the state’s interior network, which currently has 380 MW installed.

Significant Investments

The total investments involved are also impressive, reaching R$ 160 million. Another initiative to improve the region’s energy system is the implementation of the Mauá 3 thermal power plant, which is expected to produce 900 MW. Under construction in the city of Manaus, the works are expected to be completed in October this year.

Expansion Program

And the actions to expand the energy system in the state of Amazonas do not stop here. By 2018, R$ 6 billion will be invested by the federal government, Ministry of Mines and Energy, and Eletrobrás to improve the electric sector in the capital and interior of the state.

Planned Improvements

These improvements involve the construction of new thermal power plants, integration of more municipalities into the National Interconnected System – SIN, as well as the installation of new distribution networks, creation of new lines and substations, and the expansion of the Luz para Todos Program.

Auction and Opportunities

In parallel, the government also announced that starting in April, an auction will be held for the concession to build some lines that will connect various communities in nine states of the Legal Amazon to other regions of the country through the SIN. Whether for the construction of thermal power plants or the expansion of distribution networks, the use of generators for temporary power supply is essential, signaling a good opportunity for companies in the sector to operate in the region.
