Temporary Power in Shopping Centers
The use of temporary power in shopping centers is becoming an increasingly viable alternative for reducing electricity bills during peak hours.
A mall in the southern region of the country had a high electricity consumption bill, contracted from the local utility.
Initial Situation
Monthly, the bill was around R$ 880,000, with R$ 200,000 just during peak hours, which is between 5 PM and 8 PM, when rates are higher.
Migration Strategy
To reduce costs, in the second half of 2015, the facility opted to migrate from the captive market to the free energy market.
Since the migration from the captive to the free market can take up to a year, the mall opted to hire generators, a solution that resulted in a 14% reduction in energy costs over a five-month period.
Implemented Solution
The mall hired three generators and one for stand-by, responsible for generating 2.5 MW of power for the entire mall, except for cinemas and anchor stores.
The generators started operating in November, and the results were quick to appear.
Achieved Results
The peak hour bill dropped from R$ 200,000 to R$ 84,500.
To this amount, R$ 88,000 was added, which was the cost of diesel used in the generators.
The total bill was R$ 172,500, representing a 14% savings.
