In September 2018, Petrobras presented its growth expectations for 2019. According to information released by the company’s Chief Financial and Investor Relations Officer, Rafael Grisolia, the company’s forecast is to increase oil production to 2.3 million barrels per day, a number 9.5% higher than the forecast for this year, which is 2.1 million barrels per day.
To help achieve this goal, new facilities were built, such as the P-74 in the city of Búzios, Rio de Janeiro, in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin, São Paulo, and the Cidade Campos dos Goytacazes platform in the Tartaruga Verde and Mestiça field, in the Campos Basin, also in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Offshore energy challenges
With the increase in production and oil facilities, there is a significant impact on the hiring of suppliers in the segment and also an increased demand for solutions in electric energy. Installed offshore and up to 300 km from the coast, oil platforms do not rely on energy supplied by traditional utilities. Investments to connect them to the SIN, National Interconnected System, would make the business unfeasible due to the high cost.
Thus, energy is generated by the platform itself, using gas turbines and steam engines or supplied by diesel generators, the most common and well-established modality in the sector.
If energy is a fundamental input to operate the complex floating structures installed offshore, it is also essential to activate and maintain the operation of the heavy machinery used in oil extraction, which can be at a depth of up to seven thousand meters.
Critical energy security
However, it is not enough to have generators in operation. Oil companies increasingly demand strategic and tailored solutions in energy security, which address the most diverse situations. Offshore, the lack of energy can mean:
- Total work stoppage
- Huge financial losses
- Risks to onboard workers
A single platform can have up to 150 employees working simultaneously, making energy security an absolute priority.
Tecnogera solutions for the sector
To meet the demands of the oil & gas sector, Tecnogera, which has extensive know-how in the segment and engineering applied to on and offshore solutions, has been offering lighter and more compact equipment, with higher power density and that provide the same energy while consuming less fuel.
Advantages of Tecnogera Generators
- Compact and lightweight design
- Higher power density
- Lower fuel consumption
- Ease of transport and installation
- Reduction in logistical costs
The company has a fleet of over 800 generator sets and provides smaller and lighter generators to clients in the oil & gas sector, which do not need to be dismantled before being hoisted to the platform. These new generator models, in addition to occupying less space, end up reducing the logistical costs involved in transporting the equipment from the coast to the platform.
