Iron ore extraction hits record highs again

The Brazilian mining sector has resumed growth after two years of stagnation, with Vale reporting an iron ore production of 366.5 million tons in 2017, a 5.1% increase over the previous year. The extractive industry accounts for 4.3% of the national GDP, driving the demand for temporary power in remote operations. Tecnogera offers tailored solutions for the sector, providing reliable power at every stage of mining projects.

Mining sector records growth after two years

After two years without recording growth, the mining sector, especially the iron ore extraction segment, has returned to growth and is breaking production records.

According to data released by Vale, last February, the mining company produced, in 2017 alone, 366.5 million tons of iron ore, a volume 5.1% higher compared to 2016. For 2018, the company’s expectation is to end the year with production around 390 million tons.

Importance of mining in the Brazilian economy

The extractive industry, according to information from the Brazilian Mining Institute (Ibram), represents 4.3% of the entire Brazilian Gross Domestic Product (GDP), behind sectors such as agriculture (5.3%), industry (24.9%), and services, with 69.8%.

Impact on the temporary energy sector

This good moment, in addition to favoring Brazil in the international commodity producers market, directly impacts other branches of the economy, including temporary energy suppliers, responsible for the energy security of extracting companies.

Operational characteristics of mining

To understand the importance of temporary energy for the sector, it is necessary to observe that the operation of the main mining players is far from large centers, often in isolated areas, distant from electrical grids and without connection to the National Interconnected System – SIN. In this model, the supply is done in the “on-the-grid/onsite” format, which means an operation that occurs on-site and disconnected from the conventional grid.

Applications of generators in mining

Therefore, in this scenario, generators become essential for a mining site to start and remain operational.

Project feasibility phase

In the project feasibility phase, for example, generators are used to energize facilities, such as construction sites, heavy machinery testing areas, and the entire structure so that employees have the conditions to operate, as mines often operate continuously and for long periods. In this stage, temporary energy is also used to transport large machines to the region where they will operate.

During extraction

When extraction begins, especially of ores removed from great depths, generators are responsible for the operation of all the machinery used and the ventilation systems, as well as controlling the activation of safety alarms and emergency lights.
