Excavation and Tunnel Construction in Major Projects

Tunnel construction employs advanced methods like NATM and DrillandBlast, using specialized equipment such as Shield, large-scale excavators, and, when necessary, controlled explosives. The presence of power generators is crucial in these projects, not only to ensure safety through proper lighting but also to maintain continuous productivity by powering essential machines and systems even during power outages.

Today, there are various ways to begin excavation and tunnel construction.

In Brazil, the most commonly used methods are NATM and DrillandBlast — both executed by equipment called Shield, which can initiate the “tunnel mouth” opening and simultaneously install anchors that will support the structure.

Subsequently, a large-scale excavator (or backhoe) begins the work of removing soil.

Milling machines installed on the excavators hold the tunnel walls and allow other equipment to enter and continue drilling.

In some cases, excavators capable of digging, collecting soil, and directing it to a conveyor belt leading out of the tunnel are used.

This process occurs without detonation and is known as continuous excavation.

When rocks obstruct drilling by excavators, explosives are used to clear the path.

It’s interesting to note that there are specific machines designed to create openings in the rock and introduce explosives with the help of an injection pump that penetrates the rock.

Detonation is conducted only after a detailed analysis of the work, considering potential impacts.

Finally, loaders are responsible for transporting all extracted material out of the tunnel.

The Importance of a Power Generator in Tunnel Excavation and Construction

Given the large scale of these projects, involving many workers, equipment, and investments, using a power generator for tunnel excavation and construction is essential.

The primary reason for this is safety: the company responsible for the project must ensure a suitable environment for all tasks.

In this case, the generator powers various lighting points that facilitate work and worker movement inside the tunnel.

Another crucial point justifying the use of a power generator in tunnel excavation and construction is productivity.

A quality piece of equipment can meet the electrical power demand and supply various machines daily.

Thus, even if there is a blackout lasting hours or frequent power outages, the project’s productivity will not be affected, and the schedule will be maintained.
