Blackout underscores need for investment in energy security

The March 21, 2018 blackout affected 13 states in the North and Northeast, causing millions in losses for the industrial sector. The incident, resulting from a technical failure at the Xingu (PA) substation, highlighted the vulnerability of the national electrical system and the importance of energy security solutions. Generator rental emerges as a viable alternative for companies that cannot afford operational downtime, offering specialized maintenance and up-to-date technology without the need for significant equipment acquisition investments.

Blackout affects 13 states in the North and Northeast

On the afternoon of March 21, 2018, a blackout left 13 states in the North and Northeast regions of the country without power. The interruption in supply was caused by a technical failure in the transmission line of the Belo Monte concessionaire, located in Pará.

The failure, which occurred in a circuit breaker of one of the transmission structures at the Xingu substation, also left some cities in the South and Southeast regions without power.

Impacts of the blackout on cities

For several hours, what was seen in hundreds of Brazilian municipalities – in Maranhão alone 217 were left without power and in Rio Grande do Norte a total of 167 were affected by the blackout – was the total productive paralysis of the cities. Factories of various sizes and segments halted their operations, businesses closed their doors, airports had their flights canceled, and traffic in large cities became chaotic due to non-functioning traffic lights.

Losses for the industrial sector

For the industrial sector, a failure like this causes enormous losses, such as halted production lines and delayed deliveries, in addition to the underutilization of labor, which cannot work without its essential input: electricity.

Data on financial losses

To give an idea, a recent study by the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) found that a power interruption of up to two minutes generates a loss of about R$ 135,000 for an industry in the Northeast region. If the blackout lasts an hour, the loss rises to R$ 750,000, a value that can significantly compromise a company’s financial performance.

Energy security solutions

To avoid this type of interruption, the natural path for companies is to invest in energy security solutions, such as hiring generators, which are installed at the industry’s plant and come into operation in cases of power outages, fluctuations in supply by the concessionaire, or to maintain production lines during scheduled shutdowns.

Advantages of leasing over acquisition

And, unlike in the past, the trend is that organizations no longer invest in acquiring these pieces of equipment, an initiative that requires large investments. The most practical, functional, and economically viable solution is leasing. In this modality, the company is guaranteed that the generators will start operating when the power is interrupted, will have permanent maintenance, service from a specialized team, and replacement with more modern equipment as the market advances.
