There are many forums where we have reflected on the concepts of sustainability, represented by the acronym ESG, which translates to the balance of the tripod Environment, Society, and Governance.
More recently, the concept has expanded to EESG, adding the term “Economy.”
This is because the economic aspect of business cannot be detached, as one of the objectives of any company is to generate profit.
But it’s not about generating profit at any cost. It’s necessary to pay attention to sustainability, socioeconomic, and governance issues. It’s about thinking of financial returns while also considering social and environmental risks and opportunities.
People have basic needs that are even more pronounced in less developed countries or those with many inequalities, such as Brazil.
Reflecting on these needs like water, sanitation, housing, food, employment, education, health, and security, I want to highlight ENERGY here.
None of the items we listed can happen in a truly positive way, especially in current times, without the ENERGY that enables all the others to develop.
With every discussion, every forum, and every trip across our country, it becomes more evident that the worst and most expensive type of ENERGY is the one that doesn’t exist, isn’t available, or isn’t sufficient.
That absence that prevents a community from developing, a school from being established, a hospital from being built, or a company from being founded or progressing there.
Our country still has 212 communities and cities that are not connected to the national electrical system.
In many locations, the quality and availability of energy are limited, deterring investments and socio-economic progress.
There can be no (E)ESG without ENERGY.
We have priority needs that obviously precede discussions about types of sources, emissions, technologies, etc.
Of course, they are extremely important, but there are greater pains.
